Townsville Engineering Firm Helps Haughton Solar Farm to Keep Powering

"It's great to see local businesses engaged in this way because when locals are employed, it supports the entire business ecosystem of our wider community"

One of the great things about working in regional Queensland is the connections and relationships you’re able to form.

Earlier this year, Pacific Hydro reached out to TEi Services after hearing about our unique expertise and skills through word of mouth.

They were looking for a firm to deliver an innovative solution to assist them to keep the Haughton Solar Farm powering long into the future.

We were engaged by Pacific Hydro to develop a tailored solution for the farm’s Solar Power Conditioning Units (PCU). The harshness of the North Queensland environment had seen significant deterioration of certain elements of the PCUs.

TEi Services worked closely with Pacific Hydro to come up with a solution that would suit the North Queensland weather extremities and still be functional in years to come.

PCUs are the storage facilities for things such as inverters and batteries which are integral to the running of a solar farm. The doors on the PCUs are extremely heavy, weighing up to 150 kilograms which sees a lot of pressure put on the hinges.

The TEi Services team was able to come up with a unique solution, using our knowledge of the local climate and the best ways to deal with it. Our solution included lubricated hinges from stainless steel, so the hinge won’t rust, break or become a safety issue for the Haughton solar farm in the future.

With four of our 50 staff on site at the Haughton Solar Farm for the past three months, the project has been an important one, particularly in the current COVID climate.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have consistent work coming in throughout the past few months. Our focus is on long term projects and planning around that and it’s been a relief to know our staff and their families can remain supported throughout these challenging times.

It’s also been a fantastic opportunity for our team to work alongside a company the size of Pacific Hydro to see the way they’ve handled safety and the strong OH&S culture of a business of that scale.

Pacific Hydro has just engaged TEi Services for another project on the same site and we’re excited to be able to continue the partnership and collaboration between the two businesses.

It’s great to see local businesses engaged in this way because when locals are employed, it supports the entire business ecosystem of our wider community.
